But sir, you can’t make a database for the whole world!

While the NFT related stuff is ongoing (see https://nft.icdb.io/mint) I want to take the time to talk a bit more about the whole Database project as such.

First of all, yes we can!

We heard many people say, its impossible to build a car database for the whole world. Its too difficult, there’s too many differences. Anyone who claims supporting the whole world is lying and so on

We heard it a couple of times and Yes!, its a hugely enthusiastic project. What people say is true yes. There currently is no platform, website, app or anything reliably supporting the whole world. At least none thats telling the truth.

We’re talking about countless car makes, models, trims…yes trims thats what the US market is using. We, in Germany, use different things. Yet again in Japan things are different. Volkswagen is selling different models in the US compared to germany and while that is already hard to manage there’s countless more differences. Simple things like different engine’s being sold in different regions of this lovely planet but also different regulations in how various things are measured.

Theres miles vs kilometers which alone is a difference as some regions measure acceleration in like 0–60mph while europe usually uses 0–100kmh.
Some people drive on the left, some right…the list is long! However there’s ways to get around these differences, yes, all of them.

So? What are you gonna do about it?
While i don’t want to share all technical details yet, I’d like to talk about one of the things we’re working on to achieve usability for everyone on this planet and keep the regional differences in place.

In really short, the app will look and feel different based on the user. If you’re an american guy you’ll see all values shown in horse power and miles. As a german you’ll see everything based on kilometers. But it doesn’t end here!

Everything from search options to labels to placement of things onscreen is based on regional differences. Its literarily a different app depending on where you open it from (or your user settings…you can always choose!)

We even show different images per region. Coming from UK? You’d prolly love images with the steering wheel on your “correct” side eh? We try to match pictures to the region like a german won’t see images of a car driving on an american highway if he doesn’t want to.

…If he doesn’t want to?

Yea! one of the most important things is that everything is configurable, you can freely decide which things you want to see and which you don’t want to. Our whole ui is highly customizable.

Ok…UI but what about the API users?

Yes we know, it doesn’t end with the UI. Many user’s will probably not use the app but rather choose the API to connect to their own systems. We even thought of this! I can’t tell you all the details yet but you’ll be able to configure so many things, you can customize the API as if you wrote it for yourself. Especially since it will be based on GraphQL you have a lot of freedom to get the data you need with all your regional regulations in place.
